Chin Augmentation & Chin Liposuction

The chin is an important landmark in the facial profile. Often, the extension of the chin is not adequate giving the midface and the nose a falsely large appearance. A “weak chin” brings disharmony in its relationship to other facial structures. As we age, we also start to develop a “double chin”. This is due to both the deposition of fat underneath the chin and also to the laxity of a muscle sling that suspends the tissue underneath the chin.

Chin Augmentation & Chin Liposuction Procedure

Re-establishment of ideal chin contour can be achieved by augmenting the chin with an implant (silicone, Teflon or Dacron) or by making a horizontal incision in the jawbone and sliding the separated bone into the desired position. Both are done through incisions hidden in the mouth. Fat can be removed by liposuction or the muscle sling tightened (platysma placation) to remove the “double chin” through a small incision placed underneath the chin.

Recovery from Chin Augmentation/Chin Liposuction

Each patient’s experience with facial implants may differ. Mild to moderate bruising and minimal discomfort can be expected with either procedure. If chin liposuction is performed, sutures are removed from the small external incision underneath the chin within 5 to 7 days. If a chin implant is placed, the sutures are internal and dissolve on their own.
