Chin Augmentation / Jaw Augmentation Procedure
Establishment of ideal jaw contour can be achieved through chin augmentation with an implant (silicone, teflon or dacron), or by making a horizontal cut in the jaw bone and sliding the separated bone into the desired position. Both are done through incisions hidden in the mouth.
After making an incision, Dr. Sinha will place the implants over the jawbone, increasing the dimensions and skillfully defining the shape of the chin and/or jaw line. During the procedure, fat can also be removed (chin liposuction) or the muscle sling under the chin tightened to further address a “double chin”. The muscle-tightening procedure requires only a small incision placed in the skin behind the chin.
Chin implant or jaw implant surgery is administered with twilight sedation, meaning that the patient has pain relief for comfort, but is not entirely unconscious. The procedure is preformed in an accredited and licensed ambulatory surgical center near Dr. Sinha’s Atlanta office.
Recovery from Chin Augmentation and Jaw Implant Surgery
Dr. Sinha will apply surgical tape around the implant area; this is needed for four to seven days to restrict excessive jaw movement. Intra-oral (inside the mouth) stitches will dissolve within a week. If chin liposuction is performed, sutures from the small external incision hidden underneath the chin are removed in 5 to 7 days.
Common side effects from chin or jaw implants include swelling, bruising, and soreness/tightness of the jaw. Dr. Sinha will prescribe pain medication when needed for the jaw soreness and tightness, while the patient can minimize swelling by keeping the head elevated. If bruising or discoloration occurs, it will subside within a couple of days, or a week at most.
