Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eye contact, and therefore confidence about the appearance of the eyes, is vital to optimal social and romantic interaction. Eyes of any shade can be one’s best feature, provided that taunt eyelids bring out the iris’ brilliance and color. However, with aging, our eyelids tend to interfere with our eyes’ natural beauty and sometime their function as well, since aging causes a loss of elasticity to the eyelid and under-eye skin. This can lead to an excess of skin on the upper lid and on the under eye area, “bags under the eyes” can form. The bags-under-the-eyes look often translates to a tired and worn-down appearance of the whole face. Above and below the eye, fat (which normally protects the eyeball from the bony eye socket) can pooch out and cause sagging or drooping around the eyes.

Rejuvenation with Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, results in a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the eyelids (upper blepharoplasty) and the under eye area (lower blepharoplasty) by skillfully and artfully removing the excess skin. By tightening up the eyelid skin, Eyelid surgery can bring the viewer’s focus back to the patient’s eyes, as eyes seem more open and inviting. Friends and family generally comment on how much more energetic and positive the patient appears after the procedure. In addition to eliminating bags under the eyes, eyelid surgery can free patients from a generally puffy-eyed appearance. Dr. Sinha believes that the most natural results are achieved by not changing the shape of the eyes, but rather giving your eyes the youthful, taunt appearance they once had.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Blepharoplasty is a procedure by which excess fat and excess skin is removed from the eyelids and region around the eyes to give a more youthful appearance and help patients see better (in cases where the skin fold is obstructing vision). Patients love this relatively short and simple procedure because it can be performed with hidden incisions and minimal downtime, but grant a dramatic improvement in appearance. Dr. Sinha makes hidden incisions inside the lower eyelid and/or external incisions placed strategically within eyelid creases to remove excess skin and fat. The blepharoplasty procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis, with anesthesia sedation for complete comfort.

Patients may opt for upper blepharoplasty (eyelid), or lower blepharoplasty (under the eye), or both procedures.  Eyelid surgery is often performed in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as Laser skin resurfacing, Wrinkle treatment, or the Eyebrow lift.

Recovery from Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery patients are discharged the same day of the procedure to a responsible party. Patients cannot drive themselves home after surgery. There is may be some mild swelling and bruising around the eyes—this will subside within a few weeks, revealing firmer skin and no bags under the eyes. An aesthetician from the Atlanta Institute for Facial Aesthetic Surgery will help you with camouflage make-up during the first week after eyelid surgery to keep your life as normal as possible. Blepharoplasty sutures are usually well hidden, and are removed after the first 5 days.

Some patients may experience dryness of the eyes post-operatively. The eyelid skin heals very quickly and most patients can resume their daily routine within a couple of days. As with any surgical procedure, Atlanta Institute for Facial Aesthetic Surgery staff members will assist you in preparing to minimize swelling and bruising post-operatively.

Making a Decision Regarding Eyelid Surgery

The decision to proceed with eyelid surgery requires planning. As with the other cosmetic surgery procedures offered at Atlanta Institute for Facial Aesthetic Surgery, we offer a comprehensive consultation to those who are considering eyelid surgery. Consultations provide patients with education, individualized procedure recommendations in line with personal medical history, computer imaging to communicate results visually, and assistance with the financial investment of blepharoplasty.

Consultations can determine whether eyelid surgery is the ideal surgery for your needs, or if your aesthetic concerns would be better served by another cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, such as Facial Fillers, Botox, or Laser Wrinkle Removal.
