A new, long-lasting product is now available for enhancing lips and removing fine lines and wrinkles. Radiesse incorporates the most advanced technology to offer an excellent alternative to those seeking injectable fillers.
What is Radiesse?
At its elemental level, the Radiesse injectable implant is a patented, proprietary mixture of an aqueous based gel carrier blended with spherical particles of synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). The gel carrier suspends the CaHA particles and allows them to be readily delivered through injection needles. The aqueous gel carrier ingredients are all biocompatible and classified as ‘Generally Recognized as Safe’ by the United States Food and Drug Administration. The implant’s key compound, synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite, is identical in composition to the mineral portion of human bone (though remaining soft and pliable), making it exceptionally compatible with the human body. Calcium hyroxylapaptite has been used for decades in plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthopedics, otology, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, and urology.
Is it Safe?
A very thorough safety assessment was conducted on Radiesse, which included a pharmaceutical component safety review, complete biocompatibility studies, and a three-year animal implant study. This established the baseline for an extensive safety profile that was confirmed in clinical studies in the United States and Europe. To date, no reaction from or rejection of the implant has been observed. No human or animal tissue, or other derivative is used in any of the Radiesse products, providing absolute assurance that there is no means of contracting any human or animal disease from the implant material.
Radiesse injections remain soft and pliable at the injection site, which infiltrates with soft, fibrous tissue. In the event additional augmentation is required at a later date due to anatomical changes or other reasons, Radiesse can be injected in the same anatomical area to supplement a prior injection. Animal studies have demonstrated that supplemental injections will follow the same physiological process as the original injection.
How is Radiesse being used?
Radiesse is currently being used by Dr. Sinha as an alternative soft tissue filler to Collagen for enhancing lips and eliminating fine lines and wrinkles in the face (“laugh lines, deep naso-labial folds). Given that Radiesse is reported to last “years”, the benefit over every 3 month collagen injections is obvious. From a price, recovery, and followup visit perspective, Radiance seems to hold promise as the “definitive” soft tissue filler.
Dr. Sinha recommends that patients get Collagen or Restylane (pending FDA approval) on their first visit, however, because it is important for the patient to know what to expect from soft tissue filler injections. Once the patient is satisfied with the cosmetic results, the more permanent Radiesse injection can be considered.
