Otoplasty (Ear Setback)

Otoplasty (Correction of Protruding Ears)

The fold in the cartilage of the ear keeps the ear bent back into a normal position. Sometimes, children are born without one of the folds resulting in the ears protruding prominently outwards. This can sometimes be the target of ridicule in school.

Fortunately, a simple procedure designed to re-establish the folds in the ear, allows us to setback the ear into the usual position. The incisions are hidden behind the ear.

Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty will not alter your hearing ability. Incisions are made just behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. The surgeon will remove the necessary amounts of cartilage and skin required to achieve the right effect. In some cases, the surgeon will trim the cartilage, shaping it into a more desirable form and then pull the cartilage back with permanent sutures to secure the cartilage. In some cases, cartilage will not be removed, however permanent sutures are used to hold the cartilage.

Recovery from Otoplasty

Soft dressings are applied to the ears and usually remain intact for a few days. Most patient will experience some mild discomfort controlled with pain medication. If you are accustomed to sleeping on your side, your sleep pattern may be disrupted for a couple weeks following surgery. Headbands are often recommended to help hold the ears in the desired position for a couple of weeks after surgery. Scars are hidden in natural creases behind the ear and difficult to detect once healing is complete.

Making a Decision

It is important to consult with your doctor to be sure that you are a candidate for otoplasty surgery. We offer complimentary consultations to provide education, assistance in identifying the appropriate recommendations for each individual, computer imaging to communicate visually, and assistance with your financial investment. Please contact our patient consultant, Lisa DeGirolamo to schedule your complimentary visit.

Investment

Insurance does not usually cover surgery for cosmetic reason. The cost of the procedure varies depending on each individuals needs, but typically ranges from $3,500 - $4,500.

Ear Lobe Repair

Many women (and men) who wear heavy earings have piercings that elongate with time and sometimes pull through the bottom of the earlobe. Not only does this prevent the use of earings but is also obviously unsightly. A simple office procedure can correct this damage and allow for future use of earings.

Ear Lobe Procedure

The procedure is usually performed in the doctor’s office with local anesthesia. A special Z-shaped incision is made during the repair to prevent “notching” of the lower border of the ear lobe that is sometimes seen when an attempt is made to close the incision with only simple sutures. Sutures are placed and remain intactfor approximately 5 days. The ear can be repierced after 6 weeks and earings can be worn again.

Investment

The cost of the procedure varies depending on each individuals needs, but can range anywhere from $375 - $675.
