Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

Otoplasty, also known as ear reshaping or ear pinning

An otoplasty, also known as ear reshaping or ear pinning, is a cosmetic procedure that improves the appearance of abnormally large, protruding or uneven ears, which can occur naturally or as a result of injury. During an otoplasty, the ears are reshaped to be more symmetrical, reduced in size or pinned back to lie closer to the head.

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. During an otoplasty, small incisions are made within the natural fold behind the ear, so very little scaring is visible after the operation. Depending on the goal and needs of the patient, small amounts of cartilage and skin may be removed and the ear will be subtly reshaped to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. To pin back protruding ears, permanent sutures may be used. Typically both ears will be operated on to ensure a symmetrical appearance, even if only one ear is misshapen. After the procedure is complete, a pressure dressing is placed over the ears to keep them in place while they heal. An otoplasty typically takes about two hours to complete.

There is usually very little pain or bruising post-op. Most people are able to return to work or their regular schedules five to seven days after the surgery, although rigorous activity should be avoided for the first couple months.
