What is Microneedling with PRP?
Microneedling with PRP combines the skincare benefits of microneedling with the rejuvenating effects of platelet rich plasma, or PRP. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a treatment performed on the skin to help treat fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, acne, enlarged pores, and other skin imperfections. PRP stimulates your body’s natural healing process. It is often used in sports medicine for injuries. By combining these microneedling and PRP processes, your skin rejuvenates itself and your complexion appears more refreshed after a few treatments.
How Does it Work?
Microneedling is an in office treatment that helps your body to create more collagen. This occurs by using a specialty technique to create small injuries to the outer layer of the skin. These small injuries are very similar to pinholes. Your body will then be triggered to start healing these tiny injuries, as it is responding to your skin being slightly damaged. During your body’s healing process, collagen production is stimulated. Collagen is a fibrous protein that is an essential building block to the skin’s structure. Collagen helps to treat wrinkles, acne scarring, and other skin imperfections. It also supports the production of hyaluronic acid and elastin, which are vital for a refreshed appearance. Hyaluronic acid helps your skin to retain moisture. Elastin keeps your skin tight, firm, and youthful. Essentially, microneedling encourages your body to heal itself and reveal a radiant and rejuvenated appearance. When this is combined with the benefits of PRP, the amazing results of microneedling are greatly increased.
Platelet rich plasma, PRP, is a treatment that is used for many different purposes to regenerate parts of muscles, skin tissue, and nerves. It immerses cells in a concentrated blend of platelets that are derived from your own blood. Platelets are cell fragments that play a large role in the clotting process. This blend is created by drawing blood from a patient and then putting that blood through a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the blood into different layers so the platelet rich plasma can be extracted. Then the platelets are applied topically to the patient’s face. It is absorbed better into the skin when combined with microneedling, as the small needles create little holes for the plasma to enter the skin layer better. This plasma is sometimes called your body’s own “liquid gold”, as it helps to increase the speed of the healing process, stimulating faster collagen and elastin growth. Although PRP is a newer technique, it is widely used in sports medicine through injection to help get athletes back to top playing condition quickly. So why not try these rejuvenating properties to your skincare?
What to Expect During Treatment
When you come into our office, you will be welcomed by our warm staff. Once you are in the office we will make sure you are as calm and relaxed as possible. Prior to the treatment beginning, a topical numbing cream will be applied for your comfort. While this sinks in and starts to work, a nurse will draw a small amount of blood from you. Then the blood will be spun in our centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The session will then begin and the plasma will be used during and after the microneedling. During the microneedling a small device that has many little needles will pass over the skin. These needles will create the small injuries, or pinholes, on the skin. By creating these small injuries, your “natural serum”, or platelet rich plasma, is able to penetrate your skin even better. You will go home with PRP and medical grade products that will absorb into your face until the next morning. For optimal results, treatments should be repeated three to six times, spaced out over four weeks. The amount of treatments you will need will vary depending on your skin condition.
Recovery from Microneedling with PRP
After treatment, your skin may look pink and feel similar to a sunburn. Slight swelling may also be present. This will usually subside within the first twenty four to seventy two hours.
The next day and the week following your treatment, you will need to use gentle skincare products. A mild moisturizer, sunscreen, and cleanser should be used until your skin has fully recovered. More intense skin care products, such as retinols and retin A, can be used again after five to seven days of healing time. While your skin is healing it may feel tight and dry. You may also notice that your skin is flaking. This is a result of your skin shedding old and damaged cells and preparing for your new and rejuvenated complexion. Some patients may see positive results after the first few days following treatment. Your results will continue to improve for up to six months following your treatment, while increased collagen production continues.
