Dermaplane Facial Exfoliation
Dermaplaning is one of the most effective exfoliation treatments available for the face. It is a gentle and simple process that uses a sterile surgical scalpel that is lightly moved across the face to tone, resurface and touch-up the skin. This evenly “skims off” the upper layers of dead skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. The result is smoother, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin.
What dermaplaning can do for you
In addition to exfoliation, dermaplaning removes the fine vellus hairs (“peach fuzz”) on the face. Many of our patients prefer this method of hair removal over waxing as it leaves less irritation on the skin. Dermaplaning is also used to prevent acne breakouts and treat acne scars, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, treat large or clogged pores, and create a more even skin tone and texture.
Dermaplaning can be an excellent alternative to patients with rosacea, broken capillaries or extremely sensitive skin who cannot tolerate chemical peels or the vacuum-like suction of microdermabrasion. It is a safe treatment for patients who are pregnant or nursing who want a deep exfoliation, but cannot use peeling agents on their skin because of the risk of the chemicals being absorbed into the bloodstream. For some patients, dermaplaning may be combined with a chemical peel to allow the acid solution to penetrate deeper and more evenly into the skin.
How does dermaplaning work?
Dermaplaning is a non-surgical procedure performed in our offices, and no anesthetic is required. It is a very quick treatment that usually takes around 45 minutes from start to finish.
It begins with a thorough cleansing of the treatment area. Next, dead skin cells, dirt, and oil are gently scraped away by using a sterile, surgical scalpel. Each area of the face is carefully scraped to remove just the right amount of dead skin without harming healthy layers. If you have other skin problems, such as an uneven skin tone you would like addressed, a chemical peel may be follow dermaplaning. Your treatment session will end with the application of clinical skin products and UV protection to help provide you with a glowing finish.
For advanced skin corrections, multiple treatment sessions may be recommended. Treatments are generally four to six weeks apart to allow your skin plenty of recovery time after each procedure.
What to expect following the procedure
There is no downtime after this treatment. Dermaplaning is often referred to as a “lunchtime treatment,” as patients are typically able to return back to work as soon as the treatment is over. You may have slight redness for 24 to 48 hours following the procedure, but your skin will feel tighter and smoother immediately.
